June Declared Aboriginal History Month

The Saskatchewan government has declared June 2007 to be Aboriginal History Month.

The city of Regina has done the same thing.

The move is being made in response to a campaign by the Regina Aboriginal Professionals Association — which feels National Aboriginal Day on June 21st is not enough time to properly recognize the contributions of First Nations and Metis people.

President Joely Big Eagle says the next task is to convince the federal government to follow suit.

First Nations and Metis Relations Minister Maynard Sonntag says it’s too early to say if the provincial designation will extend beyond this year.
