The community of Ile-a-la-Crosse today celebrated the grand opening of a new state-of-the-art facility, which has integrated the local high school, hospital and community service programs.
Local resident and MLA Buckley Belanger says northern communities have a difficult time dealing with the influx of drugs and motivating kids to attend school.
However, he believes the Ile-a-la-Crosse Integrated Services Centre will help reinvent and reinvigorate the community, while creating opportunities for the youth.
The two-storey, 75,000 sq. ft. facility will provide services to hospital patients and long-term care clients, as well as students in Grades 7 through 12.
The building also includes a multi-purpose gymnasium and theatre, a child care centre, medical clinic, pharmacy and community services for residents dealing with addictions and other issues.
The entire project cost approximately $33.7 million.
Patients and hospital staff moved from the old St. Joseph’s Hospital on Monday.
St. Joseph’s was first established in 1927.
