A group of Christian evangelists says the group has travelled from Louisiana to Prince Albert this week to provide spiritual encouragement to the hurting First Nations population.

Roy Chacon and Marty Martinez are both Native American, and are affiliated with Jimmy Swaggart Ministries.

They were invited to Prince Albert by local pastor Andrew Bear, who filled them in on some of the issues facing First Nations people in the area.

Chacon says he was motivated to make the trip north when he heard about the high number of suicides in the Aboriginal community.

“The reason I came here is because I heard about the influence of alcohol, drugs, suicide and all these sorts of things that are going on. And I came from that life of alcohol, and so I’ve been ministering about the bondage of alcohol for the last 25 years,” Chacon says.

Chacon says his group’s visit to Prince Albert is a stand-alone stop, and their first to Canada.
