An official on the James Smith Cree Nation says he feels confident water supplies on the reserve are safe, despite the concerns of a band member.

Bill Marion is the manager of public works for the reserve, which is located about 45 kilometres southeast of Prince Albert.

Recently, a published report brought to light the concerns of a band member who claimed the water was making her children sick.

Marion says he doesn’t think the situation is the result of the water, as all cisterns are inspected regularly.

However, he notes much of the housing on the reserve is old and the underground cisterns that supply water to rural houses can settle and begin to shift.

Marion says that scenario is a concern that his crews do check for during their inspection tours.

So far, he doesn’t know of any cisterns that are supplying unsafe water.

He says if any residents do have a concern, though, they should contact the band office and someone will be sent out.
