An inquest continues in Prince Albert today, examing the death of a prisoner at the Saskatchewan Penitentary.

The inquest heard this morning from Corporal Milo, a former member of the RCMP’s Joint Forces Unit.

He was working the morning guards discovered 52 year-old Michael Merrill dead in his cell.

Milo testified, he received a call from the institution around 7 a.m. He drove to the jail where he inspected both Merrill’s body and his cell.

After an initial investigation, Milo determined the rope the inmate used to hang himself came from a laundry bag. He said there was no sign of a struggle or foul play.

He noted Merrill had pills in his cell designed to treat an upset stomach and skin rash, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Milo said none of the inmates he interviewed, thought Merrill would take his own life. But some thought he was depressed and noted he seemed to think he had a lot of health problems.

Milo said in the end he determined Merrill’s death to be a suicide.
