An Ontario chief who works with companies to help them work with First Nations communities has some advice for companies developing traditional First Nations land.

Chief Glenn Nolan of the Missinabie Cree First Nation was speaking at the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals conference in Saskatoon yesterday.

He says companies need to have a plan when they try to engage First Nations about development on their land — and a clear commitment that they will stick to that plan.

He says he can’t over-stress how important relationship-building is, comparing it to a marriage.

Nolan suggests companies research the community, because each one is different.

He also says it is important to outline realistic expectations for the project, and to make contact early and regularly.
