The first Indigenous astronaut will be speaking this weekend in Toronto at a conference about using technology for social and economic development.

John Herrington is from the Chickasaw Nation and grew up in Oklahoma.

He had the childhood dream of becoming an astronaut, but never really believed it could happen until many years later.

He was eventually hired by NASA and flew into space.

Herrington will tell his story of how he became an astronaut at the Four Worlds International Institute conference.

He wants to tell people that it is important to always work on improving yourself, and says technology is a great way to do that.

Herrington says it is critical that people become digitally literate, so people can connect with one another and share their stories.
