Indian Affairs Withholds Millions From FNUC

A spokesman for Indian Affairs confirms that some funding has been temporarily withdrawn from the First Nations University of Canada.

INAC spokesman Trevor Sutter says the government is placing certain conditions over the release of $2.4 million.

He says the move was made to get the school to make changes into how it is run.

Sutter says the money will be released periodically, as the school releases reports into how the moves are coming.

Meantime, the chairman of the university’s board of directors says they are working with INAC to accommodate the required changes.

Chief Clarence Bellegarde says $1 million of the withheld money is tied to a review on governance, while $600,000 apiece is tied to reports on operations and senior management.

He says the issue was discussed back in March, and there’s really nothing new here.

He expects the review to get underway by July, with a final report to be completed in November or December.

Recommendations from the report will then be sent to the Saskatchewan chiefs.
