The task of getting more First Nations and Metis residents into the province’s workforce has received a little government help.
Yesterday in Saskatoon, Indian Affairs minister Andy Scott and Aboriginal Affairs minister Maynard Sonntag agreed to have their departments work on different strategies to get businesses hiring more Aboriginal people.
Sonntag says there’s not much they can do to actually force employers to hire Aboriginal workers but they can show them the benefits of doing so.
Sonntag adds he’s not sure why it took the two levels of government a decade to formalize a partnership when they’ve both been working towards the same goal.
Still, he views the move as a “win-win” for everyone.
