The first-ever Northern Literacy Festival got started in Prince Albert today.

The two-day event is aimed at creating dialogue about literacy in the North, whether it is in the Cree, Denesuline or English languages.

Close to 85 librarians, teachers, mayors and other stakeholders have turned out for the gathering.

Coordinator Sandra Butler says she hopes people attending the meeting leave with a clearer sense of who to contact when they want help boosting reading rates in their communities.

She says the aim is to establish a northern literacy network.

The conference is taking place at the Marlboro Inn and wraps up tomorrow.
