Environment Minister David Forbes says he’s not certain how a recent court case involving six Dene trappers will affect government policy.

It was earlier this week that the Northwest Territories dropped charges against the Athabasca residents for hunting practices it deemed illegal.

Forbes says he is just learning what actually happened in the case, but he’s glad it didn’t go to trial.

He also wants to make it clear he does support the rights of traditional land users.

The minister adds he hopes future disputes get settled without having to enter the legal arena.

Forbes says the case will be reviewed by his office at some point.

He states any policy changes regarding harvesting practices will likely be made with the help of the other governments affected.
