An autopsy is being conducted today on the body of a 44-year-old woman who was shot and killed by a police officer in Prince Albert earlier this week.

The Prince Albert Police Service says it knows the identity of the deceased.

However, at the request of family members, her name is being withheld for now.

An officer from Saskatoon has been brought in to oversee the investigation.

Police say the woman was shot Tuesday afternoon after she confronted officers with a knife in a West Flat residence.

The force says officers tried to retreat from the home, but couldn’t — and that’s when the shot was fired.

The woman was rushed to hospital, but did not survive.
