ICC Rules Ottawa Owes Saskatchewan Band More Land

Saskatchewan’s Lucky Man First Nation deserves more land, according to the Indian Claims Commission.

The commission ruled today that the federal government owes the Battlefords-area band land for two more band members.

In 1887, a federal government survey found that the Lucky Man band had 62 members.

In a TLE agreement signed in 1989, the federal government agreed to provide land for 60 people — the population in 1976.

The band felt that was unfair, so it took its case to the Indian Claims Commission.

An ICC spokesperson says the band now has to wait for the federal government’s response.

It’s unclear when the government will respond.
