Over 1,300 people are in Winnipeg for the first day of a national conference for residential school survivors.

The three-day event is being hosted by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, but the federal government has had a hand in it, as well.

Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada wants a strategy developed to help prepare for when the money from compensation payments starts to flow to survivors late this year.

Conference organizers say participants will help develop a resource guide to be used as a tool for all front-line workers in Canada who work directly with survivors.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine and former Manitoba MLA Elijah Harper are among the special guest speakers at this week’s gathering.
