Housing Funds Not Close To What’s Needed: BATC

New federal funding that is now available for housing on First Nations is just not enough, according to the Chair of the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs.

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl says his government is providing $400 million over two years for Aboriginal housing.

But BATC Chair Sheldon Wuttunee says Saskatchewan only gets $60 million of that total.

Wuttunee says that won’t go far in a province in which hundreds of houses are needed on some individual reserves.

The funds will go toward servicing new lots, building new homes and renovating existing ones.

Federal officials say it will also provide jobs for Aboriginal people.
