Housing Boom Hurting Affordable Housing Programs

The president of SaskHousing admits the current housing boom in Saskatchewan is taking a bite out of the government’s affordable housing programs.

The cost of buying, building and renting homes in the province has skyrocketed in the last six months.

As a result, Darrell Jones says the $60 million in new money earmarked in February’s budget to help low-income families find accomodation won’t stretch as far as hoped.

Jones says his agency has already started to adapt to the new housing market, and will continue to make adjustments.

He also notes government agencies are trying to educated low-income people in the inner city and the North about these programs, but he says getting the word out is always a challenge.
