Tragedy this morning on the Island Lake First Nation.

A 3-year-old girl has been killed in a house fire.

The victim, 4 other children and 3 adults were sleeping in a house in the community when the blaze broke out.

The RCMP says the fire started at about 4 am, and most of the home’s occupants made it out of the burning structure safe and sound.

Once outside, the girl’s father realized she was still inside and entered the burning home in an attempt to save his daughter — but he was turned back by the smoke and the heat.

The RCMP says the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious, but they don’t know what caused the blaze.

The girl’s name has not been released.
