Highway 955 Blockade Comes Down

A blockade on Highway 955, North of La Loche, has come down.

On Friday, band members of the Clearwater River Dene Nation took down barriers they had erected north of the reserve to keep out energy company, Oilsands Quest.

The First Nation was upset with a lack of consultation they felt they were getting with the project.

However, Chief Roy Cheechum says he has now gotten the assurances he needs from the Provincial Government.

Cheechum says this doesn’t mean the oil company will be able to do whatever it wants. But it does provide a framework for all parties to move forward and arrive at a fair working arrangement.

He adds the situation will continue to be monitored and worked on.
