Heat Supply At Key Lake Down For Hours

There was a bit of a weather-related scare for workers at the Key Lake mine site yesterday.
There was no heat in the residences and in the kitchen for about 7-and-half hours, beginning around 11:00 in the morning.
During that time, the temperatures ranged from minus 35 to minus 43 degrees Celsius.
Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn says a transformer failed because of the cold, but an emergency generator was eventually installed at around 6:30 last night.
He says, given the extreme cold, the company treated the matter very seriously.
Krahn notes the temperature in the residence never dipped below 15 degrees Celsius.
He also says there were a number of trailers where workers could get warm.
Still, a planeload of about 30 non-essential workers — mostly contractors — was flown out as a precaution.
