A fiery crash near Deschambault Lake has claimed the lives of four people.

At last word, Highway 106 was down to one lane of traffic because of a two-vehicle collision involving a mini-van and a semi-trailer unit shortly before 9:00 this morning at the 186 marker of the highway.

The RCMP say the mini-van was travelling in front of the semi-trailer when it pulled over to the right shoulder, made an immediate turn to travel in the opposite direction, and was broadsided by the semi-unit before entering the ditch.

Sgt. Carole Raymond says by the time the Mounties arrived, four of the passengers of the mini-van had already passed away.

Raymond says one of them had been ejected, while the other three were trapped inside the burning vehicle.

Two others in the vehicle survived — a woman and a man. The woman is in critical condition, while the man’s injuries are described as less serious.

The ages and identities of those killed have not been released — but investigators say two were males and two were females. At least one of the deceased is believed to be from Pelican Narrows.

The driver of the semi-unit was not injured.

The RCMP are still conducting their investigation.
