Hatchet Lake Leaders Dealing With Vandalism Crisis

The chief of the Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation is refusing to talk about an emergency band meeting held the other night.

Sources say Wednesday’s meeting centred around a recent rash of vandalism and break and enters that have affected almost everyone in the community — including nurses and teachers.

Nurses’ residences, teacherages, band facilities and a private residence have been the targets of thieves and vandals.

The emergency meeting was called by the chief and council to see if any solutions could be found to end what one local resident is calling a “crisis” situation.

It’s not clear what, if anything, was settled at the meeting.

Chief Louie Josie is declining to comment.
