The stage has been set for another bitter election battle in northern Saskatchewan.
The Conservatives have announced they’ve nominated former Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Jeremy Harrison as their candidate in the riding in the next federal election.
Harrison lost his seat to Liberal MP Gary Merasty by less than 100 votes in last year’s election.
Following his defeat, Harrison alleged Liberal supporters were responsible for numerous voting irregularities on certain reserves in the riding – a claim that has since been refuted by Elections Canada.
Harrison also angered many Aboriginal leaders for comparing those reserves to “banana republics”.
Harrison’s candidacy in the coming election wasn’t entirely unexpected. During an election-style tour of the riding last summer, he strongly hinted he would be taking another run at his old seat.
Conservative Party spokesperson Denise Dodds says Harrison was the best MP northern Saskatchewan has ever had.
Harrison says the citizens of northern Saskatchewan deserve better representation than they have been getting from Merasty, a Liberal opposition backbencher.
