Hansen Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

A former area director with the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan has been sentenced to three years in prison for two sexual assaults.

60-year-old Norman Hansen of Buffalo Narrows pleaded guilty to the charges in April.

Court heard that Hansen raped a 44-year-old Manitoba woman who had got drunk at a hotel bar during a job interview with the MNS.

In the second incident, he grabbed a bar waitress and forced her to kiss him as she struggled to free herself.

Both the Crown and defence had asked for a conditional sentence, but the judge ruled the crimes were too serious for Hansen to avoid jail time.

Hansen will serve his sentence in a federal penitentiary.

His lawyer is planning an appeal.
