The Metis Centre at the National Aboriginal Health Organization is offering three $5,000 grants to Metis graduate students.

The Metis Centre Fellowship Program is designed to provide support to students engaged in research on Metis population health-related issues.

Metis Centre Director Lois Edge says there is currently a lack of Metis-specific health research, since most studies on “Aboriginal” health usually have a First Nations focus.

Edge says one of the things that makes Metis health issues distinct from First Nations health issues is the discrepancy in federal funding.

Applicants have until December 1st to apply for the grants.

University of Saskatchewan graduate student Rae Mitten was one of the first 3 people to win the grant this past May.

She’s working towards a Ph.D by studying treatments and prevention for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
