A former resident of Cumberland House who now resides in La Ronge has won a very prestigious award.

22-year-old John Carriere was one of 12 people nationwide to be recognized by the National Aboriginal Health Organization as one of this year’s National Aboriginal Role Models.

Carriere received the award for his work in the community and his many accomplishments over the years.

He says he was dumbfounded when the Governor General handed him the award in a ceremony this past Saturday.

According to Carriere, “I couldn’t even speak. She was talking to me, and I couldn’t even process it.”

Carriere volunteers at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre working with youth.
