Government Response to Inquiry Report Criticized

The Chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council says he’s disappointed by the government’s response to the Neil Stonechild inquiry.

Gary Merasty says he would have liked to have seen more concrete decisions announced yesterday, instead of the justice minister’s pledge to review more policy.

Merasty notes the provincial government already made similar promises earlier this year when the Commission on First Nations and Metis Peoples and Justice Reform released its final report, and says it’s time for action.

Merasty adds he’s hopeful the Stonechild matter will help lead to more Aboriginal police officers being hired over the coming years.

He says provincial demographics indicate that simply has to happen.
