Residential school survivors have received just over $88 million since the Independent Assessment Process came into effect in September 2007.

According to figures released by Ottawa earlier this week, 5,407 claims have been filed under the IAP — while another 1,203 claims have been transferred in from the Alternative Dispute Resolution process.

The claims of 2,273 former students have been dealt with under the ADR process during this time period.

The government says a total of 1,409 ADR/IAP claims have been settled.

Under the IAP, former students can be compensated for sexual abuse, serious physical abuse and any other wrongful acts done to them that caused serious psychological damage.

IAP payments can be as high as $275,000 — but based on the statistics released this week, the average compensation payment for ADR/IAP claims since September 2007 has been $62,486.

The federal government has set aside $5 billion for the program.

It is scheduled to wrap up in 2012.
