The La Ronge-based Gary Tinker Federation is one of five community-based organizations to receive the province’s first annual Spirit Award.

Spokesman George Ward says the federation is honored to be one of the award’s first recipients for its work in the North.

Ward says the Gary Tinker Federation was established to help those with disabilities in the areas of employment and training.

Ward says the group will be holding a recognition ceremony in the coming months to celebrate the award.

The Gary Tinker Federation was formed in 1989, after Tinker didn’t let cerebral palsy stop him from walking to Regina from La Ronge in an effort to raise awareness about the plight of disabled people in northern Saskatchewan.
