Government Defends Fines In Fish Wasting Case

A director with Saskatchewan Environment says he’s satisfied there are enough deterrents to avoid a repeat of a recent case of fish wastage in the North.

Kevin Callele says this sort of offence isn’t something that happens very often.

Last month, a tourist discovered two piles of dead fish lying on the ice on Keeley Lake.

He alerted a fishing lodge operator who then contacted the authorities, resulting in charges against a commercial fisher from the Canoe Lake area.

That operator could face a court-imposed sentence unless he decides to pay a fine in the neighbourhood of $500.

Callele is confident the case will send the appropriate message to the public.

Callele also wishes to thank the public for its assistance in this case, and notes the department couldn’t have caught the man without their help.
