Government officials say they can’t comment on a notice of contravention that was given to the owner of a northern Saskatchewan gold mine in the wake of a fatal accident last year.

On May 29th, 29-year-old Cory Braaten died after the loader he was operating reportedly plunged through the floor of the underground level he was on at the Seabee mine.

According to a CBC report, Claude Resources has been instructed to ensure its Seabee mine workers obey warning signs at all times.

The notice says there was a rope barring entrance to the area of the mine where the accident happened, but Braaten went in anyway.

The province also is telling the Saskatoon-based company to build barriers to protect miners from holes that might be a hidden hazard.

The government file on the case has been passed to the justice ministry to determine if any charges will be laid.

Officials at Claude Resources have not been immediately available for comment.

However, the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix is reporting that the company is appealing the notice of contravention.
