An officer with the RCMP says gangs shouldn’t be regarded as a problem but rather as a symptom of a deeper issue.

Craig Nyirfa works for the RCMP professional development centre for aborigial policing in Ottawa .

Wednesday he told delegates at the northern justice symposium that aboriginal gangs were mainly found west of Thunder Bay .

He says their existence in communities is usually generated by deeper problems.

Nyirfa says he finds it ironic many aboriginal gang-members want to emulate the behaviour of black gang-members because it’s completely contrary to their culture.
