Gang Strategy Gets Blessing From Tribal Council

A new gang strategy announced today for Saskatoon is getting the thumbs up from the local tribal council.

Saskatoon Tribal Council chief Joe Quewezance is glad the plan addresses risk factors that are often ignored — such as poverty and racism.

The tribal council is one of several agencies that have been working on the strategy with the federal, provincial and municipal governments since October.

It was developed in response to gang activity in Saskatoon.

The plan will build upon existing community and justice-related resources — such as employment, education, recreation and substance abuse treatment programs.

Its objectives are to increase public awareness of gang-related problems, address factors that encourage gang membership, help gang members leave that lifestyle and reduce gang-related crime.
