Future Of Treaty Commissioner’s Office More Secure

Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice has broken his silence about the future of the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.
Prentice says action is being taken to ensure the interim stability of the treaty commissioner’s office — including interim funding and the hiring of an interim caretaker to make sure after-year-end legal and financial obligations are met.
The previous mandate of the office expired on March 31st, as did the term of former treaty commissioner Judge David Arnot.
Prentice says he’s directed Indian Affairs officials to continue discussions with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations about renewing the office’s mandate over the long term.
That includes identifying Arnot’s replacement.
Prentice says he wants to see this taken care of as quickly as possible.
The FSIN has repeatedly stated it wants to see former Tory Indian Affairs Minister Bill McKnight appointed to the post.
