Future Of MLTC Health In Jeopardy

An official with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s health department says a shortfall in federal dollars is making it tougher for the organization to offer regular service to band members.

Janet McVicar says funding levels for her department have not risen signficantly since the mid-1990s.

She explains this causes problems, especially when it comes to hiring new nurses or even casual ones.

Recently a vice-chief with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations wrote a letter to the Regina Leader-Post, saying the MLTC health service could be at risk of being dismantled if new money doesn’t come soon.

McVicar says that statement is accurate.

She adds the department is doing the best it can, but something will need to change within the next couple of years.
