Saskatchewan’s new Minister of Highways says work will proceed on the all-weather road network in the Far North.

However, Wayne Elhard can’t say for certain if that will include the promises laid out in Lorne Calvert’s 2005 $65.5 million “Roads to Prosperity” initiative.

In that announcement, the former premier said the provincial government would move ahead with construction of an all-weather road network in the Athabasca area over the following 5 to 7 years.

Elhard says his ministry will forge ahead with northern infrastructure, but he won’t guarantee they will stick to the NDP’s plan.

He does confirm work will continue this year on constructing an all-weather road to Wollaston Lake and improving Highway 905.

Elhard also stresses his party is committed to addressing infrastructure needs in northern Saskatchewan.

Meanwhile, he says it’s his understanding that the federal government wants to be involved in the road project, and his government plans to talk to Ottawa about it.
