FSIN Says Treaty Commissioner’s Office Not Closing

The chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says he wants the office of the treaty commissioner to be moved on to a reserve.

Lawrence Joseph has also downplayed a recent newspaper article that suggests the government is looking at closing the office.

The chief says he has received assurances from Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice that the Tories plan to continue the operation.

Joseph says he also isn’t worried that a snap election call could derail efforts to keep the office alive.

He adds the FSIN was satisfied with the work done by out-going Treaty Commissioner Judge David Arnot.

However, Arnot’s name was not on a list of suggestions given to the FSIN by Prentice.

Arnot’s last day is March 30th.
