One of Saskatchewan’s prominent First Nations leaders has passed away.

Starblanket Cree Nation Chief Irvin Starblanket passed away this past Tuesday of cardiac arrest.

He had been an elected leader for more than 30 years.

His wake is being held today at the Lebret Gymnasium.

The funeral will be tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., followed by a burial service at the Starblanket cemetery.

Starblanket is being remembered by FSIN Chief Lawrence Joseph as a “treaty knowledge keeper”, and says his death is “equivalent to a community losing a library to a fire”.

Starblanket was 69 years old.
