FSIN Vice-Chief Lyle Whitefish says he hopes the census data released this isn’t used to penalize Aboriginal educational institutions.

Whitefish says he’s encouraged by the figures, but knows some numbers have been way off in previous polls which resulted in fewer government funds for Indigenous schools.

He cites the First Nations University of Canada as one example of an institution which has suffered from underfunding.

On another note, Whitefish says he isn’t surprised to see the number of Aboriginal people moving to cities is up, because he says that is where many of the opportunities are.
