FSIN Not In Favour Of Tough Approach With Gangs

A vice chief with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations doesn’t think declaring war on street gangs will necessarily help Aboriginal youth caught up in gang-related activities.

Delbert Wapass says he is aware there are those who favour a “lock ’em up” approach in addressing the issue.

However, he points out some of the kids caught up in the gangs are very young, and society shouldn’t give up on them.

Earlier this month, a police intelligence report was released which called on the province to do more to stop the growth of gang activity.

Wapass says the FSIN is willing to help and is already formulating a strategy of its own.
