The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has been swift to criticize the justice system over its handling of the Stonechild affair.

Vice chief Lawrence Joseph says the entire affair has convinced him even more that First Nations people need their own justice system to cater to their needs.

Joseph hopes to see a province-wide tribal police force established one day and applauds the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation for starting a police force of its own.

Joseph says the commission’s report underscores how out of touch the justice system is with the needs of First Nations people.
