The chief of the federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations wants to see more Tribal police forces.

Lawrence Joseph is calling for Public Safety minister Stockwell Day to re-assess the relationship that exists between first nations people and the RCMP.

It’s been just days since a first nations man was gunned down on the Whitebear reserve prompting an outside investigation.

Joseph feels that if on-reserve residents were to take on a peacekeeping role it would help change the confrontational attitude that presently exists between residents and police.

Joseph adds police officers can’t do everything and having peace officers would help ensure their safety as well.
