Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Vice-Chief Guy Lonechild has spoken with the Minister of Social Services regarding the Keeseekoose group home that was recently shut down.

Operations were temporarily suspended because of a recent incident involving a fire at the home, as well as allegations of a potentially violent confrontation between residents and staff.

Lonechild says if the provincial government wants to get involved in making such decisions, it should provide help, as well.

Lonechild also says the Saskatchewan First Nations Family and Community Institute is currently working to increase the standards for group homes on reserve.

He says the FSIN has adopted a “child-first policy” where the child’s safety always comes first.
