FSIN Applauds Proposed Gun Registry Change

The Conservative Party and Aboriginal groups hope today could be the beginning of the end of the national gun registry.
Members of Parliament will vote today on Bill C-391, a bill put forth by a Conservative Member of Parliament.
The bill would amend the requirement to register non-restricted long guns, which is something the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has called for since the registry was introduced in 2000.
The FSIN says the registry has violated the treaty right of sustenance of hunters and gatherers.
Individuals would still be required to have a valid firearms license and go through a police background check and safety training in order to purchase or possess firearms, and prohibited firearms such as handguns would still have to be registered.
