At least four candidates are in the running for the Saskatchewan Party nomination in the vacant Cumberland riding in northern Saskatchewan.

La Ronge mayor Joe Hordyski, former Cumberland House mayor Dale McAuley, longtime SaskParty candidate Winston McKay, and former MBC Cree language show host Mike Durocher are all hoping to secure the nomination.

They made their intentions known at meeting this past weekend in La Ronge with the party executive.

The main nomination meeting will be held May 3rd in La Ronge — but there will also be advance nomination meetings in Cumberland House and Creighton on May 1st and May 2nd, respectively.

One other unidentified individual is also said to be considering taking a run at the party’s nomination in the constituency.

The riding was held by former NDP cabinet minister Joan Beatty, before she decided to run in the recent federal by-election for the Liberals.

A provincial by-election has yet to be called.

The Cumberland constituency has been an NDP stronghold for the better part of four decades.
