First Nations chiefs from across the country are expected to descend on Fort Carlton next week.

The historic site is the setting for the 3rd Annual Treaties 1 to 11 Gathering, which is cheduled to run from July 24th to July 27th.

Organizer A.J. Felix of the Prince Albert Grand Council says the event is designed to give First Nations leaders a better understanding of how treaties are being affected by government decisions.

Felix says some of the topics up for discussion at the event include the historical intent of colonization, as well as the impacts of Bill C-31 and the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement.

He adds one of the goals of this year’s event is to establish a national office that could help monitor treaty implementation and protection.

Felix expects the event to draw between 1,000 to 2,500 people.
