A scientist from the West Coast says Saskatchewan should be doing more with its vast supplies of hardwood lumber in the North.
Dr. Chris Gaston of Forintek Canada recently addressed officials at the Saskatchewan Forestry Centre about this issue.
He says aspen, in particular, is a wood that could easily be turned into furniture and interior finish here in Saskatchewan.
Gaston says approximately 3.4 million cubic metres of hardwood is available for harvest in Saskatchewan each year.
About one-third of that resource is located in the Prince Albert Forest Management Agreement area, which is currently controlled by Weyerhaeuser.
