Firefighters have grabbed the upper hand over the forest fires that have plagued the Canwood and Fort a la Corne areas for the last few days.

Saskatchewan Environment spokesperson Jeanette Krayetski says the English fire, near Fort a la Corne, is now officially under control, while Canwood’s Windy fire is has been downgraded to “holding”.

While some outbuildings on the Canwood area farm yards have been lost, all five farmhouses are still standing, with only minor damage to one home, says Krayetski.

The highway is open, and all of the residents — who were voluntarily evacuated — have been cleared to go home.
