Just under two dozen Pelican Narrows residents are in Prince Albert today, trying to escape smoke from nearby forest fires.

The residents are being housed on the urban reserve of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.

The band’s Jennifer Morin says the evacuees are mainly children, the sick and the elderly.

Morin says she is not sure if any more will be coming down, but notes the situation is being closely monitored.

She adds band leaders are holding on-going talks with Saskatchewan Environment officials about the fire situation in Pelican Narrows.

At last word, the community was not considered to be in any danger from the nearby fires.
