The 65 residents of Fond du Lac who were evacuated earlier this week because of concerns over heavy smoke from forest fires in the area are on their way home.

The evacuees had been staying at a reception centre at the University of Saskatchewan since being airlifted out of Fond du Lac on Tuesday.

Public Safety officials with the province say the residents were due to leave Saskatoon early this afternoon.

The government says all the evacuees should be back in their home community by the end of the day.

Fond du Lac itself was never in any danger, but the smoke was taking its toll on the elderly, pregnant women, young children and people with breathing problems in the community.

Fond du Lac is the seventh northern community to have seen residents evacuated this summer because of forest fires.
