The Fond du Lac First Nation’s new chief will be sworn in today.

Chief electoral officer Jules Lidguerre confirms that Napoleon J. Mercredi won last week’s race on a fourth ballot.

He beat his closest opponent, Victor Fern, by 18 votes — with a final tally of 160 to 142.

Former chief Albert Mercredi was removed on the third ballot, with the remaining two candidates dropping off earlier.

Until last Thursday’s election, Napoleon J. Mercredi was the band’s economic development officer.

The First Nation has also had a shake-up on council, with only half of the incumbents re-elected.
